Mark Morgan of Clarksville and Matt Shekels of Harrison, earned the top two Young Farmers & Ranchers awards. The two and their families were honored July 22 at Arkansas Farm Bureau’s 71st Officers & Leaders Conference at the Hot Springs Convention Center. The awards honor young farmers and ranchers ages 18-35 for the general excellence of their operations, their hard work and innovation.

Arkansas was a “Natural” location to host the 2019 National Agriculture in the Classroom Conference, which attracted more than 500 educators from across the nation and featured numerous workshops and nationally recognized speakers, such as animal welfare expert and author Temple Grandin. Sixteen-year-old Faith Fritch of Hiwasse and 18-year-old Kalin Key of El Dorado bested five other finalists in their respective categories in the 2019 Arkansas Farm Bureau Dairy Foods Contest June 6 at the state fairgrounds in Little Rock. Fritch’s Salted Caramel Mini Cheesecakes recipe won in the “Party Ideas” competition, while Key’s Almost Cajun Creamy Shrimp and Grits dish earned the top spot in the “Main Dishes” category.

A Horticulture Field Day was held recently in Hope. Dr. Amanda McWhirt, horticulture extension specialist with the University of Arkansas, talks about the research going on at the Southwest Research and Extension Center and the crops they grow there, particularly blueberries and blackberries, watermelons and muscadines.
